The French begin their early morning attack (7.30am)on the the villages of Lutzeroda and Closewitz held by Tauentzien's Prussian/Saxon Detachment of 8000 men. He as been told to hold the villages for as long as possible to allow Grawert's Prussian Division of 13,000 men to take up a defensive line to his rear. All he has to do is hold off the 20,000 men of Lannes' V Corps |

The French emerge out of the early morning fog and take Tauentzien by surprise; some of his force is not yet in position and the right flank of the French assault force easily pushes a small force of Saxon Grenadiers out of Closewitz (in foreground). |

The French push into Lutzeroda and it is all over for Tauentzien's Defensive line; he has no option now but to retreat. |
